Stoneware flask with an ochre glaze; the elongated body and - Lot 43
Stoneware flask with an ochre glaze; the elongated body and neck are flanked by a handle known as a “rooster’s comb.” (Chip at the base, restoration on the neck). H. 27 cm. LIAO Dynasty (907–1125) CHINA Provenance: Private collection, Brussels, acquired in 1990 (according to insurance inventory) Reference: A similar gourd is reproduced in Mino Yutaka, *Ceramics in the Liao Dynasty, North and South of the Great Wall*, Exhibition March 15–May 28, 1973, China Institute in America, New York, p. 40, fig. 14. This gourd imitates the leather examples hung on the sides of horses by the Khitan people and thus reflects their nomadic way of life.
