BANVILLE (Théodore de) - Lot 49
BANVILLE (Théodore de) Born in Moulins (Allier). 1823-1891. Poet, playwright, precursor of Parnasse. L.A.S. "Théodore de Banville" to "Cher Monsieur Dumont". Paris, February 25, 1881. 2 pp. in-8, insolated. In 1881, the poet, desolate, was unable to respond to his friend Dumont's request. ... I have disposed of my verses to Victor Hugo for the National, where they have been requested since they were first announced. You know that I've been writing for the National since it was founded, that is, for twelve years; but there are other, more absolute reasons. Several of the members of the organizing committee for the Victor Hugo festival are also editors of Le National, so they must have wanted that paper to publish what related to the Trocadéro performance... Finally, Gil Blas had not been very enthusiastic, so Banville felt he could dispose more freely of his verses. Joint: B.A.S. "Théodore de Banville" to "Mon cher confrère", S.l., Tuesday April 12, s.d., 1 page in-12 on mourning paper. Suffering, he warns that he will not be able to write the next day's article; he will, however, write the one for Friday. Théodore de Banville is considered one of the most illustrious poets of his time, and was friends with Victor Hugo, Charles Baudelaire and Théophile Gautier. Le National is a daily newspaper founded in 1830 by Adolphe Thiers, Armand Carrel, François-Auguste Mignet and Auguste Sautelet. Gil Blas is another French daily, founded in 1879 by Auguste Dumont.
