Tablet N° 10 engraved with a drawing depicting a man in trad - Lot 269
Tablet N° 10 engraved with a drawing depicting a man in traditional Sami garb carrying utensils (cooking?) accompanied by his dog, with a shelter and a bundle carrying three bags in a lakeside landscape. Signed JP on the recto and text in ink on the verso. Transcribed in Swedish (?) by Berndt Helleberg. 22.4 x 11.8 cm. 20th century Possible translation : Here are Kosajärvi and Korsajaure, near my own village. Old Hulluka went to hide her silver treasures in the mountains, and no one ever found them. Not even herself. But on dark nights, visions can still be seen in the mountain, which is the Lapps' bank. Provenance : Berndt HELLEBERG Collection (1920-2008) Transmitted by descent We present here a set of six light wood tablets decorated with engraved and colored drawings depicting Sami folk myths or stories, carved by an artist who signs JP (probably JOHAN PEJOK). This collection was assembled in the early 1940s/1950s and partly transcribed into Swedish by Berndt Helleberg. The double-sided tablets are probably intended for passing on fairy tales to children. The configuration suggests that they were suspended, perhaps as a mobile or on the branches of a tree (?) to facilitate reading.
