A censer supported by two figures standing back-to-back. The - Lot 277
A censer supported by two figures standing back-to-back. The two heads, with hooked noses and round eyes, serve as a base for the censer. They are topped by an imposing handle, itself decorated with two snakes whose heads rest on the head of the male figure; this head is adorned with three-dot eyebrows, ear spreaders, and two labret piercings in the mouth. He wears armbands on his upper arms. The figure in the back is undecorated and armless. This striking depiction is believed to represent Tlaloc or possibly Huehueteol, the god of fire. Terracotta with an aged patina; the secondary figure’s genitalia likely underwent restoration. Mexico. State of Colima. El Chanal region. Postclassic period, 1100–1400 CE. Height: 54 cm. Provenance: Deletaille Gallery, Brussels (according to the 1986 insurance inventory, illustrated) Private collection, Brussels, acquired from the previous owner in 1971 Passed down through the family
