Divination book (traiphum: The Three Worlds), ink and color - Lot 206
Divination book (traiphum: The Three Worlds), ink and color on paper, composed of stock illustrations of the zodiac and maps accompanied by captions. L. 35.5 cm; W. 12 cm. 20th century THAILAND The page depicting the two boats is a copy of the royal traiphum housed at the National Library of Thailand, dating from 1776. The traiphum is a specifically Thai cosmographic representation. It describes the creation and organization of the universe, the various states of existence, and the cycle of rebirth. The earliest texts appeared in the 14th century in Sukhothai, the former capital of Siam. It was subsequently revised and expanded over the centuries. After the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767, a new tradition of manuscript production developed in Thonburi and later in Bangkok. Traiphum generally depict the sacred sites of India and the territories associated with Siam, blending earthly spaces, mythological realms, and sacred sites without a clear separation between these different dimensions.
