WALDECK-ROUSSEAU (Pierre Marie René) (1846-1904) - Lot 293
WALDECK-ROUSSEAU (Pierre Marie René) (1846-1904) French statesman, President of the Council under the IIIᵉ Republic. L.S. signed "René Waldeck-Rousseau" (by his chief of staff, for the Presidency of the Council), addressed to M. Vauthier, dated Paris, September 7, 1900. 1 page in-4, printed letterhead of Ministère de l'Intérieur - Cabinet du Président du Conseil, with autograph signature of chef de cabinet. Joint: autograph card signed by Mme Waldeck-Rousseau (Marie Durvis, Charcot's half-sister), dated [August 1892], 1 page in-16, on mourning paper with printed address Vilhouin, Bouvron (Loire-Inférieure). Very fine set of correspondence related to one of the leading statesmen of the IIIᵉ République. The official letter, on ministerial headed paper, thanks the recipient for his assistance with the artistic evenings given at the Ministry of the Interior on July 3 and August 13, 1900 : "Le Président du Conseil me charge de vous remercier du concours que vous avez apporté..." She adds that a voucher for an object to be chosen at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres is offered as a souvenir, a particularly attractive detail for collectors of political and administrative history. The small card signed by Mme Waldeck-Rousseau adds further family and biographical interest. A remarkable piece for the political history of the Belle Époque, directly linked to the Waldeck-Rousseau government, a pivotal period in the IIIᵉ République.
