SARCEY (Francisque). Born in Dourdan (Essonne). 1827-1899. D - Lot 268
SARCEY (Francisque). Born in Dourdan (Essonne). 1827-1899. Dramatic critic. L.A.S. "Francisque Sarcey" to "Mon cher Lermine". [Paris] 59 rue de Douai, n.d. - 1 p. in-8. Sarcey submitted his correspondent's letter to Edmond About: "I put your letter in front of About's eyes... who received Assolant's novel [Alfred Assolant] as well as Madame Paul de Moliner's... which he judged... very long... Anyway About... has no taste for adventure novels. You won't have much chance of passing through our house..." he concluded unfavorably. Edmond About (1828-1885) was Sarcey's fellow student at the École Normale Supérieure on rue d'Ulm. Sarcey was introduced by About to Le Figaro in 1857. He gained notoriety as a theater critic. His famous and eagerly awaited weekly columns in Le Figaro and Le Temps were dreaded by playwrights.
