REVOLUTION - CYPIERRE (de) - Lot 251
REVOLUTION - CYPIERRE (de) L.A.S. signed "de Cypierre", Paris, September 24, 1789. 2 pages (1 p. in-4 and 1 small in-8). Very interesting letter addressed to an influential correspondent to request an increase in salary for M. du Coudray, controller in Blois for the past seventeen years. The author stresses the seniority of the civil servant, the increasing difficulty of his duties, and describes with a rare personal dimension the unfortunate circumstances of his private life, evoking in particular an unhappy marriage and a wife "recluse in a convent", who remained in his charge. This is a remarkable piece for the vivacity of its administrative arguments, and for the testimony it provides on the human and material realities of government servants on the eve of the Revolution.
