PONTCHARTRAIN (Louis Phélypeaux, comte de). Born in Paris, 1 - Lot 240
PONTCHARTRAIN (Louis Phélypeaux, comte de). Born in Paris, 1643-1727. French politician. Comptroller General of Finances, Minister of the Navy under Louis XIV, Chancellor of France. L.S. "Pontchartrain" to Comte d'Estrées. Fontainebleau, October 31, 1696. 4 pp. in-folio. Pontchartrain informs his correspondent that the King approves his views concerning the dispatch to the Levant of the vessels Le Sérieux and Le Marquis, ...on the advice you received that a considerable number of enemy privateers had passed through... He also thought it good that these same vessels had been sent beforehand to Livorno...and that Le Sérieux bring back to the Isles of Hyères the ships destined for Marseille, to then return to his cruise between Cape Corsica and Sardinia and extend it even to the Barbary coasts. Pontchartrain also informs him that M. de Digoine has received orders to leave Toulon and head for Cap de Gatte, where he will cruise as far as the Barbary coasts and the Isles St Pierre, in order to observe the enemy's movements... I trust that these vessels have left," says the minister. "If they have not already done so by the time you receive my letter, the King allows you to give orders to Sr Le Morheux, who is riding Le Vaillant, to go as far as Malta and carry M. le bailly de Noailles, ("the bailly of Noailles"), ("the bailly of Noailles"), ("the bailly of Noailles"), ("the bailly of Noailles"), ("the bailly of Noailles"), ("the bailly of Noailles") and ("the bailly of Noailles"). le bailly de Noailles, (...) and he will then return to join L'Heureux Retour at the rendezvous set by M. de Digoine. Finally, the King has instructed M. Dupré ...to make strong complaints to M. de Grand Duc about the contraventions that the English are committing every day to the neutrality of the port of Livorno, and to declare to him that if he does not provide for this, His Majesty will be obliged to exempt his subjects from the laws of this neutrality...
