PONSON DU TERRAIL (Pierre Alexis, vicomte de) (1829-1871) - Lot 239
PONSON DU TERRAIL (Pierre Alexis, vicomte de) (1829-1871) French novelist and feuilletonist, creator of the Rocambole character. B.A.S. signed "P. du Terrail", addressed to M. Malespine (?), s.l.n.d. 1 page in-16 on laid paper, with autograph address on verso. Old postal folds, good condition. Lovely autograph letter from one of the most famous popular authors of the 19th century, concerning the serial publication of a text. The author addresses an editorial observation to his correspondent: "You see, Chapter 1 did not appear in yesterday's serial. Chapter II has been sent to me, so there's an error. Please see to it..." He adds in postscript: "I'm sending you a copy for 15 days. I'm off to the country..." This letter is particularly interesting in that it directly documents the daily work of the novelist and feuilletonist, caught up in the sustained rhythm of episodic publications at the heart of the literary press of the Second Empire and early Third Republic. A lively, evocative piece on the production of popular novels, with links to the world of the feuilleton and the immense success of Rocambole, the founding figure of the modern adventure novel.
