NORD-POULTIER (François Martin, known as Poultier d'Elmotte) - Lot 233
NORD-POULTIER (François Martin, known as Poultier d'Elmotte) (1753-1827) French politician, Conventionnel, member of the Conseil des Anciens. L.A.S. "Le colonel Poultier d'Elmotte", addressed to M. de Jouy, Académie française, dated Tournai, March 27, 1822. 1 page in-4 on laid paper, autograph address on verso, remnant of black wax seal. Good condition despite a marginal loss at the top fold with slight damage to the paper. Very interesting autograph letter relating to a biographical sketch in progress. In it, Poultier d'Elmotte corrects the errors spread by the biographers of his time: "As most bibliographers have sown the article concerning me with lies and errors...". He sends his correspondent a copy of a work containing a notice that he invites him to use for the biographical work he is undertaking: "in which you will find a notice of which you can make use..." The letter ends with a formula of high civility addressed to Victor-Joseph Étienne de Jouy, a major literary figure and academician: "Please accept, sir, the homage of distinguished sentiments..." A particularly interesting piece for the political and literary history of the first XIXᵉ century, linking a former Conventionnel with one of the great men of letters of the Restoration. The dual revolutionary/academic interest notably enhances the appeal of this document.
