Copy of a letter addressed to him by General d'Hautpoul. Paris, July 20, 1860. 1 1/2 pages in-4. Senate Palace letterhead. General d'Hautpoul asks the Emperor for the honor of commanding the troops sent to Syria: "... I made every effort with Marshal Vaillant, then Minister of War, to take part in the Crimean campaign, and later in the Italian campaign. I was unable to obtain this happiness. My soldier's heart ached. I feel strong and courageous enough to take part in the upcoming campaign, and something tells me I'm worthy of the honor. I believe I will serve your Majesty very well and justify his trust. It would be a beautiful page in my long career to tread a soil that my ancestors watered with their blood...".
