MEURICE (Paul). Born in Paris. 1818-1905. French writer. - Lot 210
MEURICE (Paul). Born in Paris. 1818-1905. French writer. L.A.S. "Paul Meurice" to "Mon cher ami". S.d., S.l. 3 pages in-12. Reacting to an article in Le Figaro claiming that he had made false statements about the actors Coquelin and Mélingue, Meurice gives his version of events to his correspondent. He explains, "like all interviewers, he only put his own opinion in my mouth (...) I said that Mélingue had physical beauty, elegance, great air and bearing, heroic simplicity and wit right down to the tips of his fingernails (...) And I said that Coquelin had cordiality, bonhomie, shrewd and even snide naivety, and that I greatly admired the open play of his mobile physiognomy. But I didn't say that Mélingue was a bit dry any more than I said that Coquelin was a bit heavy", even though he has complete confidence in his friend: "I don't think you doubt it, but I nevertheless wanted to tell you". He ends his letter by suggesting that he "come for dinner and a chat on Sunday in eight".
