MEURICE (Paul). 1820-1905. Writer. Executor of Victor Hugo's - Lot 208
MEURICE (Paul). 1820-1905. Writer. Executor of Victor Hugo's will. Editor-in-chief of L'Événement (1848) and co-founder of Le Rappel (1869), he left plays and a novel, often written in collaboration: Falstaff (with Gautier), Hamlet (with Dumas), Les Beaux Messieurs de Bois-Doré with George Sand; alone, Benvenuto Cellini and Fanfan la tulipe (1858). L.A.S. "Paul Meurice" to "Mon cher Ritt" [Eugène Ritt, director of the Porte Saint-Martin theater (Paris)]. 1 page in-8. On the letterhead of "Le Rappel" (Editorial office, 18 rue de Valois). "...M. Donato thinks I can have some influence on the management of the Porte Saint-Martin. However much I tell him he's mistaken, he asks me for a letter of recommendation for you. It seems that the difference in figures is not very important. Mr. Donato is an intelligent artist, who wears costume wonderfully well, and who can be of great service in modern drama. His claims seem to me to be very modest, and I think you would do very well to deal with him...".
