LE BRETON, Joachim (1760-1819) - Lot 190
LE BRETON, Joachim (1760-1819) French man of letters, administrator and art critic. Permanent Secretary of the Fine Arts Class of the Institut National. Known for his major role in the artistic life of the Consulate and Empire. L.A.S. signed "Joachim Le Breton", Paris, August 17, 1807. 2 pages 2/3 in-4, on engraved letterhead of the Institut National - Classe des Beaux-Arts, with allegorical vignette, handwritten address on verso and partially preserved wax seal. Beautiful letter addressed to M. Tiolier, resident engraver at the Académie de France in Rome. Le Breton expresses his esteem for Tiolier and assures him of his attachment, also mentioning the progress of his work and the Institute's expectations of boarders. He mentions the news of her progress, the academic regulations, and the enclosed congratulations from Madame Le Breton. An interesting piece on the administrative and human functioning of the Académie de France in Rome under the First Empire.
