LACRETELLE (Jean-Charles Dominique, known as the young). Born in Metz. 1766-1855. French writer and politician. He was elected to the Académie française in 1811 and became its director in 1818. L.A.S. from his wife to Monsieur Damiron. S.l., December 21, 1847. 1 page in-12. Honorine Lacretelle thanks her correspondent for his "... consoling speech...". She invites him to dinner next Friday... "You will find your dean willing to be our friend...". A convinced royalist, Lacretelle lent his support to the Duc de la Rochefoucauld-Liancourt during Louis XVI's escape attempt in 1790. In September 1797, he was imprisoned for 23 months. Author of the Précis historique de la Révolution française (5 volumes published from 1801 to 1806), he directed Le Publiciste for a time, before being appointed by Napoleon in 1806 as a member of the bureau de la presse, then imperial censor in 1810. In 1814, he rallied to the Bourbons, fleeing to Ghent during the Hundred Days.
