GIL-PÉRÈS (Jules-Charles Perès Jolin, known as) (1822-1882) - Lot 160
GIL-PÉRÈS (Jules-Charles Perès Jolin, known as) (1822-1882) French actor. L.A.S. "Gil-Pérès", addressed to Monsieur Dormeuil, s.l.n.d. 4 pages in-12, embossed letter with his initials "G P", blue ink, good condition despite some wear folds. Interesting autograph letter in which the actor apologizes for being unable to attend a rehearsal due to a health problem. He writes frankly and with a touch of humor: "I am sorry, my dear Dormeuil, not to be able to attend the rehearsal..." and goes on to say that he suffers from a "engorgement of the respiratory organs", as a result of "hot and cold". The letter offers a vivid account of an actor's daily life in the XIXᵉ century, between rehearsals, engagements and medical imperatives. The author refers to the diagnosis of Doctor Gubler, whom he describes as "a very serious doctor", before adding: "it may pass in eight days as it may last longer". Particularly tasty is the professional dimension of the letter, when Gil-Pérès mentions the cost to the troupe of a sick resident, and elegantly proposes a temporary break in his commitment: "We'll make a new deal, if that's still your intention". A fine piece for a collection on 19thᵉ century French theater, actors and artistic correspondence.
