DECAZES (Élie). - Lot 127
DECAZES (Élie). Born in Saint-Martin-de-Laye. 1780-1860. French politician. L.A.S. "E. Decazes" to "Monsieur" [Nicolas Antoine Souty]. Paris, s.d., [November 1818]. 1 p in-8. Blue cloth paper. "... I brought to you in January the portrait of my little boy to be framed, you had promised me to keep it for only ten days, and it has been a month since you have it... He therefore adds ... I beg you to expedite the sending of it..." A civil court judge, Élie Decazes became Prefect of Police thanks to Talleyrand. During an investigation into a suicide attempt by Tsar Alexander, he met Louis XVIII and became his "favorite". He was appointed Minister of Police, but his rise to the top made him many enemies. He retired from political life in 1826 to found his own coal and iron company. Nicolas Antoine Souty was a gilder, framer and dealer in colors and paintings. He founded Maison Souty in 1802, which was taken over by his son, Pierre Prosper Souty.
