D'HAUTEFORT (family of / signatory not precisely identified) - Lot 122
D'HAUTEFORT (family of / signatory not precisely identified) L.A.S. to "Monseigneur", Paris, May 23, 1814. 2 pages in-4, brown ink, fine cursive handwriting, text perfectly legible. Touching letter written in the early months of the First Restoration, in which the signatory announces his departure and intention to expatriate. The tone is particularly pathetic and elegant: "I must leave, I must flee in my despair". The author evokes the loss of his position, his present misfortunes and the coldness of the world around him: "all doors close at my appearance, all hearts freeze at my presence" The letter takes the form of a deeply respectful tribute addressed to a high-ranking personage referred to as "Monseigneur" and "mon Prince", to whom the correspondent expresses an almost filial gratitude: "of this paternal benevolence to which I owe so much happiness". A beautiful testimony to a moment of personal and political rupture, in the troubled climate of 1814.
