CHRISTIAN (Christian Perrin, dit) (1821-1889) - Lot 108
CHRISTIAN (Christian Perrin, dit) (1821-1889) French actor and singer, who created the role of La Périchole in 1868. L.A.S. "Christian", dated Courteuil par Senlis, January 30, 1872. 1 page in-8 on laid paper, brown ink, with red armorial stamp or monogrammed with the numeral C at the head. Fine condition, slight marginal wear. Lovely autograph letter addressed to "Mon cher Choler", concerning a proposed theatrical engagement. The author elegantly declines an offer he considers insufficient: "The modest fees you are offering me prevent me from even giving you my figure...". In a tone both firm and witty, he continues: "I know too well from experience the fate of comedians who don't enter through the front door, to risk entering your home as an excess." The letter concludes with a tasty allusion to the world of Parisian theater: "I shall therefore wait at the Odeon, where I am well placed, as esteem, for what Murger called the bald occasion." A particularly interesting document for the history of 19thᵉ century theater, illustrating the customs of negotiating engagements and stipends between artists and theater managers. The mention of the Odéon and the reference to Murger reinforce the piece's literary and theatrical interest.
