CHICOT (Jean) (1576-1648) - Lot 105
CHICOT (Jean) (1576-1648) Physician to Louis XIII. P.S. "Chicot", dated March 31, 1632. Autograph receipt on vellum, oblong folio, 1 sheet on vellum skin, writing in brown ink, text on recto and mention of receipt on verso. Two old filing perforations. Good condition, creases and creases from use. Particularly interesting administrative document from Jean Chicot, ordinary physician to King Louis XIII, concerning payment of his wages for the first quarter of 1632. The document bears a receipt for the sum of 300 livres, corresponding to his quarterly stipend. The reverse side bears the words: "Pour servir de quittance à Monsieur de Sainctot, conseiller et trésorier général de la maison du Roy...". This type of document accurately illustrates the workings of the King's household under the Ancien Régime, as well as the financial organization attached to the court's medical offices. Documents concerning royal physicians are sought after for their dual historical and institutional interest, at the crossroads of medical and monarchical history. The vellum support, the precise dating and the presence of the signature make this set particularly attractive.
