CHAZAL (Jean-Pierre). Born in Pont-Saint-Esprit (Gard). 1766 - Lot 101
CHAZAL (Jean-Pierre). Born in Pont-Saint-Esprit (Gard). 1766-1840. French politician. Conventionnel representative for Gard. Member of the Comité de Salut Public and the Conseil des Cinq Cents. Member of the Tribunate, then Prefect. Exiled in January 1816, he returned to France after the July Revolution. L.A.S. "J.-P. Chazal" and L.A., addressed to Bascle de la Grèze. Mondenard, August 10, 1831. 1 p. in-4. 2 pp. in-8. Address. Postmarks. Jean-Pierre Chazal, who for years has been trying, with the help of his friend Bascle de la Grèze, to get his son Charles back on the straight and narrow, has already spent large sums of money to pay off the latter's gambling debts. This time, the cup is full and he takes drastic measures. I beg you to close and have closed all credit to Mr. Charles," he says, "and tell him that after the way he has behaved in Paris, he must leave as soon as possible... He will retire to the village that Bascle will assign to him and will receive, in all, 50 francs a month. He will work as a clerk in a solicitor's office in order to settle his debts... until this expiation and the complete extinction of his debt, which he considers himself to be without a family that he has been good only at devouring in misfortune, desolation and despair for six years..." In the meantime, he received a letter from his son, begging for new credit, swearing that this was the last time it would happen. "This lesson has cured me for life of a fatal passion which was already beginning to take a great empire over me..." Chazal's reaction, written afterwards, is clear: I rely on you," he writes to Bascle de la Grèze, "to tell him that if I had behaved as he did in the high Pyrenees, I would not have left the name he found there, and that it was not I, but he who wanted to cover himself with an indelible stain at the start of an honorable career. Failing in the probity which forbids gambling with the property of others...".
