CÉLINE (Louis-Ferdinand Destouches, known as L.-F.). - Lot 97
CÉLINE (Louis-Ferdinand Destouches, known as L.-F.). Born in Courbevoie. 1894-1961. Physician. Writer. Author of Voyage au bout de la nuit. Autograph page from the manuscript D'un château l'autre. 1 folio page, on cream vellum, numbered 569. Erasures and corrections. Fragment of the autograph manuscript of the novel D'un château l'autre, published in 1957 by Gallimard, in which Céline recounts his stay in Sigmaringen, Germany, during the German rout. ...569) have their little idea bell indeed the idea their little idea that a little stab wouldn't do me any harm... You must know Commandant?... - You're not entirely wrong to be suspicious, Doctor. - I won't go and see Letron... but I'll go back to the station where really [ca to] it's the end of ends... not only are all my pregnant ladies from the School of Agriculture, are there instead of going out at all to keep quiet with their pregnancies, to wait for the term... they've had a dormitory built for them! the trouble we've had! thirty straw mattresses... every day a splendid marmite... not just raves! noodles and margarine! they're at the station commanding... D'un château l'autre tells the story of Céline, a doctor for the poor, his wife Lili, a dancer, and the enormous cat Bébert, in Sigmaringen at the end of 1944. Nazi Germany has brought together Pétain, Laval and France's leading champions of collaboration. At 64, Céline had found his style. Just as popular as in Voyage au bout de la nuit, just as eructant as in Mort à crédit, but constructed, elaborate, triturated. It's all unfinished sentences, periods, breaks in logic. The manuscripts and successive drafts of D'un Château l'autre show that Céline deliberately deconstructed the initial sentence to do as the painters of his century did: eliminate the subject in favor of expression.
