BRASSEUR (Jules) - Lot 93
BRASSEUR (Jules) French actor (1829-1890), a major figure in Parisian theater during the Second Empire and Third Republic. L.A.S. signed "J. Brasseur" to Messieurs les Directeurs, Maisons-Laffitte, February 16, 1872, 1 page in-8. Interesting autograph letter in which the actor informs theater directors of his indisposition and temporary inability to perform. The lively text blends the customs of professional correspondence with the personal tone of an artist anxious to fulfill his commitments: "I should rest for three weeks". but, true to form, he immediately clarifies: "I've forced myself to be able to play only next Monday or Tuesday. But count on Tuesday." The letter naturally illustrates the physical constraints of acting in the XIXᵉ century, and retains documentary interest for the history of Parisian theater. Beautiful signature.
