BARTHÉLEMY-SAINT-HILAIRE (Jules). Born in Paris. 1805-1895. - Lot 71
BARTHÉLEMY-SAINT-HILAIRE (Jules). Born in Paris. 1805-1895. French philosopher, journalist and statesman. L.A.S. "B. S Hilaire" to "Ma chère Marthe". Paris, June 16, 1877. 1 page in-8. Blue paper. Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire informs his correspondent that he has no ticket for today's session at the Senate. He explains: ... we only have them in turn; and my turn has not come. In any case, there will be nothing today in the Senate, and everything will take place in the Chamber of Deputies... He adds: ... For our part, we won't discuss anything until we are asked to dissolve, probably in a few days' time. If I had tickets, I'd send you some... During the first part of his life, Jules Barthélemy-Saint-Hilaire contributed to various newspapers, such as Le Globe and Le Courrier français, in which he expressed his opposition to the policies of Charles X. Later, he undertook a translation of Aristotle that earned him a chair in philosophy at the Collège de France. He returned to politics in 1869, when he was elected deputy. In 1871, he contributed to Thiers's election by acting as his general secretary. Appointed senator for life in 1875, he took his seat among the moderate Republicans. Transcription : Paris, rue d'Astorg 29 Bis June 16, 1877 My dear Marthe, I have no tickets for today's session: we only have them in turn; and my turn has not come. There will be nothing today in the Senate, and everything will take place in the Chamber of Deputies. For our part, we won't discuss anything until we're asked to dissolve the government, probably in a few days' time. If I had tickets, I'd send you some. Please accept, my dear Marthe, the assurance of my most affectionate sentiments. B. S Hilaire
