BARET (Jean-François). - Lot 70
BARET (Jean-François). Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. 1756-1800. French politician. L.A.S. "J. F. Baret" to the "Citizens of the Régie du domaine et de l'enregistrement". Paris, 21 floréal an 7 [17 mai 1799]. 1 p. in-4. Very interested in citizen Platel's petition, J.-F. Baret has the honor of forwarding it. He adds: "I have had the opportunity to follow the petitioner's conduct for several years, and I must do justice to declare that I have always found him to be in line with the true principles of the most pronounced patriotism, and the purest probity. He is active, intelligent, the father of an unfortunate family; the trip he has made to the Tarn department has exhausted his last resources. He recommends him most earnestly to citizen Pupillard, as ... a citizen on whom you can count in whatever position you employ him...". Receiving his Master of Arts degree from the University of Paris at the age of 21, J.-F. Baret began his career writing plays, articles and works on Freemasonry and the Archbishop of Malines. In 1792, he joined the Jacobin club in Brussels, first as president, then as secretary. He then returned to his hometown, becoming commissioner of the Directoire exécutif in 1794.
