BANVILLE (Théodore de). Born in Moulins. 1823-1891. French poet. L.A.S. "Théodore de Banville" to Léon Cléry. S.l.n.d. (Paris, December 29, 1886). 1 p. in-8. Stamped envelope. Warm letter of thanks. ... How good of you to give me such happy news at once and before anyone has the right to know about it!... exclaims the poet. He recognizes ... the exquisite and precious friendship ... of his correspondent. He adds ... You couldn't have given me greater joy. Your little note arrives when I'm home alone; but how happy my wife will be when she gets home, thanks to you! I'll say thank you right away, but we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts... A poet in love with rhyme, Théodore de Banville was the author of verse collections such as Odes funambulesques (1857), much admired by Sainte-Beuve, and Les exilés (1867). We also owe him plays such as Le cousin du roi (1857) and Gringoire (1866), as well as Trente-six ballades joyeuses (1873), in which he wonderfully revived the spirit of Villon.
