BANVILLE (THÉODORE DE). Born in Moulins. 1823-1891. Poet, pl - Lot 55
BANVILLE (THÉODORE DE). Born in Moulins. 1823-1891. Poet, playwright and literary critic. L.A.S. "Th. de B." to Joséphin Péladan (rue des Beaux-Arts, Paris). 1 page in-8. Mourning paper. Stamped envelope. Banville, joking, ... Le Moniteur has no more feuilleton this morning than Gautier had a red vest last Monday. No feuilleton at all... and no explanation to justify it! He will, he adds, go to Jules Janin to ... buy it for you, but to appreciate his feuilleton, I limit myself to an eloquent silence!... Joséphin Péladan (1858-1918) was a personality who stood out at the end of the XIXᵉ century for his mystical Catholicism and his taste for esotericism. He was the author of novels, including Le Vice suprême published in 1884, plays and treatises. He claimed to be a magician and called himself "Sar", borrowing the term from ancient Persian. In 1890, he founded the Order of the Rosicrucian Temple, a breakaway from the traditional Rosicrucian society, and his interest in art led him to organize Rosicrucian exhibitions in Paris from 1892 onwards.
