AZAÏS (Pierre Hyacinthe). - Lot 43
AZAÏS (Pierre Hyacinthe). Born in Sorèze. 1766-1845. Philosopher. L.A.S. "Azaïs". Paris, s.d., Sunday morning. 1 page small in-8. Watermarked vergé. Azaïs announces that his ...session yesterday was singularly satisfying for me, for I could not deceive myself about the satisfaction of my listeners. I'm sending you a copy... He considers that the time has come to ...provoke, in my favor, a particular course, and the reading of my latest work. This is a commission I give to your philosophical zeal and your friendship... Son of composer and music master Hyacinthe Azaïs (1741-1795), he became organist at Villemagne Abbey, joined the Congregation of Christian Doctrine and left to take part in the events of the Revolution. Proscribed after the 18 fructidor, he remained in hiding for three years in a hospice run by the Sisters of Charity. Napoleon appointed him professor of history at the Prytanée de Saint-Cyr and lecturer at the Athénée, then bookshop inspector in Nancy during the Hundred Days, losing this post in 1815. He then became a publicist, applying his philosophical optimism to politics. His dual system of philosophy and physics, famous in the early 19th century, claimed to explain all the vicissitudes of human destiny by the law of compensation, and all the phenomena of nature and the world by the law of equilibrium. According to his theory, the world obeys two supreme forces: expansion and compensation. It is their actions and reactions that produce equilibrium, the factor of universal harmony.
