AUGIER (Émile). - Lot 39
AUGIER (Émile). Born in Valence. 1820-1889. Poet and playwright. Elected to the Académie française in 1857. 2 L.A.S. "E. Augier" to composer Ambroise Thomas. [Paris], May 14, 1878 and s.l., October 9, 1878. 2 pp. 1/3 in-8 and 1 page 1/3 in-12. Émile Augier has decided to write to his colleague and friend, the bailiff of the Conservatoire having shown him ...a wooden face... by declaring the director unapproachable. He hopes for the composer's support for a family of 6 girls and 1 boy, a particularly interesting family he would like to help. ...The son, aged 15 and a half, would like to enter the Conservatoire in a violin and solfeggio class. The brother says he's already a pretty good violinist. Then there's another girl, aged 8 1/2, who we'd like to enroll in a piano class. What should the young violinist do?... A few months later, Émile Augier's protégé, admitted to the Conservatoire, asks to be enrolled in a violin class in order to compete... He again asks for his support. Grandson of novelist Guillaume Pigault-Lebrun, Émile Augier began his career with the play La cigüe, which met with tremendous success at the Théâtre de l'Odéon in Paris. This was followed by other plays performed on European stages, such as L'aventurière (1848), Gabrielle (1849), L'habit vert (1849) written in collaboration with Alfred de Musset, Le gendre de M. Poirier (1854) written with Jules Sandeau, and Maître Guérin (1864). He also collaborated on Eugène Labiche's play Le prix Martin (1870).
