ARTAUD (Nicolas Louis Marie) or Nicolas Artaud (born Decembe - Lot 34
ARTAUD (Nicolas Louis Marie) or Nicolas Artaud (born December 6, 1794 in Paris - died November 9, 1861 in the same city) was a French academic and translator of the XIXᵉ century. He was a pupil at the École normale, then a professor at various royal colleges. He was suspended in 1824 for writing in opposition newspapers. After the July Revolution, he became Inspector of the Académie, then Vice-Rector of the Académie de Paris. His works include esteemed translations of Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, as well as Fragments pour servir à l'histoire de la comédie antique (posthumous, 1863). L.A.S. "Artaud". Villiers, July 19, n.d. - 1 page in-4. Subscription. "...I have just read in the Journal de l'Empire the obliging account you give of my little work on painting; please allow me to express my heartfelt thanks. You are quite right in the wish you express to see a collection of old paintings added to the museum, a collection in which you will have a great obligation, if this project comes to fruition. You have at your disposal the only voices of renown, for the same thought should not be repeated several times, by the voice performed. It's true, then, that artists should be advised not to imitate all the naïve ideas of the early days (?), but what charming and pristine compositions would be placed before their eyes! Finally, Raphaël, placed between those who preceded him and those who followed him, would be a God on all sides, surrounded by glory...".
