AMANN (Paul). Born in Prague. 1884-1958. Austrian writer and translator. During the Second World War, he emigrated to France, then to the United States. In 1915, he had an epistolary relationship with the great Thomas Mann. L. dactyl. S. "Paul Amann" to "Pierre Abraham" [writer Pierre Abraham]. Vienna, July 3, 1929. 1 page in-4. Beautiful letter attesting to Amann's literary connections in France before his forced exile during World War II. He has just received his autographed Balzac. It warmed his heart. I have a sensibility whose relaxation is sometimes hard, but believe me, your charming welcome, the hours spent at your home with your friends, and especially this reading of your Balzac, so deeply researched, that all this constitutes one of the most beautiful spiritual possessions I brought back from my last stay in France... without forgetting other memories of the rue Dufetel, older, but no less fresh... He leaves for the mountains of Carinthia, bringing with him an ...important and urgent work: the translation of Romain Rolland's Ramakrishna... which forces him to postpone his work on Goethe for Rieder [the publisher]. To this end, he instructs him to ask Robert France for more time on his behalf... and invites him to come to Austria... by car, by plane, by rail... Translator of Romain Rolland, Pierre Abraham (1892-1974) began his career as a critic for newspapers and magazines. He contributed to the magazine Europe from its inception, and published several essays of noteworthy novelty and originality. Attracted by collective work, he led a research team at the Encyclopédie française in 1935. He went on to edit the journal Europe from 1949 to 1974.
