AMANN (Paul). Born in Prague. 1884-1958. Austrian writer and - Lot 21
AMANN (Paul). Born in Prague. 1884-1958. Austrian writer and translator. During the Second World War, he emigrated to France, then to the United States. In 1915, he had an epistolary relationship with the great Thomas Mann. L. dactyl. S. in violet ink "Paul Amann" to "Cher monsieur Pierre" [the writer Pierre Abraham]. Paris, S.d. [October 31]. 1 page in-4. He thanks the addressee for his study and takes the liberty of ...formulating a superficial criticism... He would have preferred the ...head of a contemporary... as a specimen of his method, for the reason that, in this case, we could have had a set of photos that would have been very useful for understanding. He adds that he had tried in vain to obtain Hellpach's work, which is now in reprint. He goes on to explain how Hellpach's point of view differs from that of the addressee: ...he looks not for traces of his man's innate, individual gifts and personal life, but for the imprint of social habits and conventions, above all of the local dialect and the temperament expressed therein. The two points of view are not mutually exclusive... He announces the forthcoming sale of the Simlers in German and tells her that a theatrical agency seems interested in Les Dix Filles. Simler & Co (1926): a work by Jean-Richard Bloch (1884-1947) translated by Paul Amann.
