AMANN (Paul). Born in Prague. 1884-1958. Austrian writer and translator. L. dactyl. S. "Paul Amann" to "My dear friend" [writer Pierre Abraham]. Vienna, January 11, 1931. 2 pages in-4. Thanks him for sending his autographed study on Proust, published in the NRF. He would be happy to translate it, having noted that the important German journal the "Neue Rundschau" ...has given extracts, however, he sees no possibility here; at present a writer from Vienna, who, like me, is unknown in Berlin, finds himself excluded from all combinations, he regrets, and adds ...My own Proustian knowledge is too incomplete to swear to your effort with full knowledge of the facts (...). If, in order to reinforce the Montaigne-Proust parallel, you have not mentioned half-Semitic heredity, you have done so advisedly. In Germany, we wouldn't have been at fault... He plans to apply for a ...small travel grant this summer (...) to come to France... Translator of Romain Rolland, Pierre Abraham (1892-1974) began his career as a critic for newspapers and magazines. He contributed to the magazine Europe from its inception, and published several essays of noteworthy novelty and originality. Attracted by collective work, he led a research team at L'Encyclopédie française in 1935. He went on to edit the journal Europe from 1949 to 1974.
