Set of six light wooden tablets with engraved and colored dr - Lot 263
Set of six light wooden tablets with engraved and colored drawings depicting Sami folk myths or stories, carved by an artist who signs JP (probably JOHAN PEJOK). This collection was assembled in the early 1940s/1950s and partly transcribed into Swedish by Berndt Helleberg. The double-sided tablets are probably intended for passing on fairy tales to children. The configuration suggests that they were suspended, perhaps as a mobile or on the branches of a tree (?) to facilitate reading.
Approx. 23 x 14 cm. each

The young Berndt Helleberg, just over twenty years old, took up his post as a drawing teacher in Kiruna (Girona), the capital of the Sami country in northern Sweden, in the early 1940s. It was during this first year that he took an interest in the Sami people and began buying their artifacts.
