A very rare form of war club depicting a stylized human figure. The pommel is shaped like a crescent or anchor. This example, with a head more diamond-shaped than circular, joins the corpus of less than twenty examples catalogued to date. Pentecost, Maewo or Aoba Islands, Vanuatu, Melanesia. Hard reddish wood (possibly casuarina equisetifolia) with a dark glossy patina from age and use. Wear, chips and cracks. Probably 19th century (possibly earlier). 62.5 cm.
