Collection of around 150 chromos from Le Bon Marché and Galeries Lafayette
The oldest circa 1900
A Liebig chromo album is included.
In the mid-19th century, advertising in France experienced a major boom thanks to the Industrial Revolution, which transformed consumer habits. New media appeared, such as illustrated posters and chromos, small advertising images distributed by retailers.
Aristide Boucicaut, founder of the Au Bon Marché stores, played a major role in their widespread distribution. Thanks to the chromolithography invented by Godefroy Engelmann, these images became more colorful and of better quality. From 1853 onwards, Le Bon Marché collaborated with printers and illustrators to produce images on a wide variety of themes to attract children and their parents.
