Brauner studied at the Bucharest School of Fine Arts until 1921. This rare Cubist drawing by Victor Brauner, produced in 1922, testifies to a brief but significant phase in his career, soon superseded by his involvement in the Dadaist and then Surrealist avant-gardes. Like many Eastern European artists attracted by Paris, then the nerve center of artistic modernity, Brauner was part of a movement to open up to French innovations, particularly those initiated by Pablo Picasso. This Cubist experience, though transitory, contributed to the liberation of forms and subjects in the artistic scenes of Central and Eastern Europe after 1918. It thus illustrates a moment of intense circulation of ideas, when French influence acted as a catalyst for emergence.
