Single-shot flintlock hunting rifle, attributed to the royal - Lot 76
Single-shot flintlock hunting rifle, attributed to the royal hunts.
Round, blued, barley-grained barrel with thunderbolt and silver rocaille sights. The thunderbolt is engraved and chased with trophies of arms, foliage and a radiating fleur-de-lys. Breech tail engraved with an exploding bomb.
Lock signed "SIMON ARQUEBUSIER DU ROY BREVETE DE MGR COMTE D'ARTOIS A PARIS" and round-bodied hammer. Upper jaw numbered "N°90".
High-relief chased and hallmarked silver fittings (title and medium guarantee hallmarks Paris 1798-1809 and small guarantee hallmark 1809-1819).
Trigger guard decorated with rocaille and hunting trophies. Counterplate decorated with hunting dogs attacking a stag. Moving bedplate decorated with rocaille, flowers and hunting trophies. Rod loops decorated with spirals.
Unengraved blank coat-of-arms thumbpiece. Carved walnut stock with leather-covered cheekpiece and silver braid.
Barrel length: 97.5 cm.
Overall length: 139 cm.
Small cracks on the front of the barrel.
B.E. Restoration period.
Despite the absence of an engraved thumbpiece, there are many elements characteristic of royal hunting rifles, notably the decoration on the barrel and the numbering on the hound's jaw.
Our rifle is one of those supplied under the Restoration with locks dating back to the Ancien Régime.
