Tablet N° 8 engraved with a drawing of a woman wearing a nav - Lot 267
Tablet N° 8 engraved with a drawing of a woman wearing a naviform cradle (gietka), a bearded man in traditional Sami garb, and a man seated facing a table holding a pen or brush, possibly a portrait of Berndt Helleberg. Signed JP on the recto with the text inscribed in ink on the verso. Attached is Berndt Helleberg's transcription in Swedish (?). 22.5 x 15.5 cm. 20th century Possible translation : There was a Lapp who had a child with a Lapp woman, but he didn't want to marry. But the woman begged Seitan to help her, and the man felt obliged to go and find the priest and buy the ring, then said to the priest Provenance : Berndt HELLEBERG Collection (1920-2008) Passed down through generations We present here a set of six light wood tablets decorated with engraved and colored drawings depicting Sami folk myths or stories, carved by an artist who signs JP (probably JOHAN PEJOK). This collection was assembled in the early 1940s/1950s and partly transcribed into Swedish by Berndt Helleberg. The double-sided tablets are probably intended for passing on fairy tales to children. The configuration suggests that they were suspended, perhaps as a mobile or on the branches of a tree (?) to facilitate reading.
