José Pierre was a French art critic, writer and historian, closely associated with the Surrealist movement. Fascinated by the thought of André Breton, he played an active role in spreading and extending the spirit of Surrealism after the Second World War. He organized major exhibitions of his time, notably "ÉROS" in 1959 at Daniel Cordier, and "L'Écart absolu" in 1965 at Georges Bernier's L'Œil gallery on rue Jacques Callot. He published numerous essays on modern art and poetry, combining a scholarly approach with a poetic sensibility. José Pierre saw art as a means of subversion and liberation of the imagination, helping to rehabilitate dreams, desire and the unconscious in artistic creation.
