Highly stylized anthropomorphic effigy with a feminine appea - Lot 244
Highly stylized anthropomorphic effigy with a feminine appearance. The body, with its bulging belly, is curved at the waist just below the arms, which at the same time indicate the breasts. The limbs are reduced to simple cones, as is the head. The rare effigies of this type II in Caldwell's corpus (2015) are considered to be related to fertility and may represent a pregnant woman. Stone (green amphibolite) with patina, formerly pitted surface and traces of wear and rubbing. Archaic cultures from the Mali region, sub-Saharan West Africa. Dimensions: 10 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm. Provenance : Jacques and Anne Kerchache Collection, Paris Publication: CALDWELL, The Use of Animals in Birth Protection Rituals and Possible Uses of Stone Figurines from the Central Sahelin, in African Arts Winter 2015, VOL. 48, fig. 2B, p. 36.
