Large war shield surmounted by a representation of an ancestor. The trichromatic decoration is carved in a raised field and features Bi-Pane nasal ornaments and stylized fruit bats. The shield features extensive native repairs and multiple spear and arrow impacts (the tips of which are still embedded in the face). On the back: strong vertical ridge in which the handle is carved, adorned on either side with incised chevrons. Wood, pigments and fibers. Lacks, cracks, breaks, wear. Height: 186 cm. Melanesia. New Guinea-Indonesia. Irian Jaya. Asmat people. 20th century.
