Statuette representing a male ancestor standing with his arms at his sides. He wears the high conical basket-weave headdress of the initiated men of the region stretching from the mouth of the Sepik River eastward to the island of Manam.
Lower Sepik region and mouth of the Ramu River, PNG, Melanesia.
Blackened wood with old patina.

Augustus H. Lane Fox Pitt Rivers, Farnham, Dorset acquired from Webster on May 17, 1899 as part of a group of 4 New German Guinea sculptures. This sculpture is reproduced in the inventories of the Pitt Rivers collection, page 1959, No. B, at the individual price of 30 shillings, then exhibited in room 7, vitrine 61 of the Pitt Rivers private museum in Farnham.
