Ceremonial adze representing the god Tane, titular deity of sculptors and artists. The octagonal cross-section handle is decorated with 41 rows of "X" representing stylized anthropomorphic figures. The quadrangular, heeled blade is inserted into its housing and held in place by a clever ligature of braided coconut fiber on a poison-skin reinforcement. Mangaia Island, Cook Islands, Polynesia. Wood, basalt, coconut fiber with a good antique patina. 19th century H. 77 cm. Provenance : Sotheby's, London, February 26, 1979, Lot 78 Acquired by Dr. James & Dr. Elisabeth Spillius from the above. Collection of Dr James (Jim) & Dr Elisabeth Spillius, London. Private collection, Paris Dr. Spillius was assistant to the English anthropologist Sir Raymond Firth on the island of Tikopia between 1952 and 1953, then professor at the London School of Economics, then posted to the W.H.O. of the UN.
