This rare type of statue was in pairs and represented the primordial couple; they are called Pombilele, the children of the Poro. They were brought out for funerals and were also used for sacrifices, which explains the crusty patina with traces of blood.
Sacrifices on statues of this type seem to be limited to the northern part of the Senufo country, and in particular the Sikasso region of Mali, and can no doubt be seen as an influence of the Bambara and Minianka cults. This type of sacrificial patina is not found on objects from central Côte d'Ivoire.
