Bibliography:
Similar in date and subject to the painting reproduced in "Papazoff, Franc-tireur du Surréalisme" by Andrei B. Nakov, ed. de la Connaissance, Brussels, 1973, p. 108
During the summers of 1930 and 1931, Papazoff spent long periods in the Dordogne at the home of his friend and collector Henri-Pierre Roché.
His visit to the prehistoric caves of Lascaux was such a shock that he refused to believe it, suspecting it was a joke on the part of his painter friends.
The monumental, mythical nature of the site, with its roots in the past, astonished him.
This unexpected encounter with a culture whose roots are lost in the mists of time and its unusual character gave rise to strange compositions of laurel-decorated rocks.
