Gilded lacquered wood sculpture of Amida Nyoraï Buddha, Japa - Lot 177
Gilded lacquered wood sculpture of Amida Nyoraï Buddha, Japan, probably late Muromachi, early Edo period.
He is seated in the kekka fuza (or zenka fuza) meditation position, with his hands in the Raigo-in mudra position, right hand pointing upwards, left hand downwards; both palms facing outwards, thumb and forefinger of each hand forming a circle; right hand at shoulder level, left hand at hip level. Face very serene, eyes half-closed, almost closed. The usual headdress of snail curls, the nikkeishu (protrusion on the front of the headdress) and the byakugo (urna element placed in the middle of the forehead) are empty, probably originally containing a rock crystal. The garment falls in delicate folds over the torso and folded legs.
H. 43 cm.
