Gilded lacquered wood sculpture of Amida Nyorai Buddha, Japa - Lot 176
Gilded lacquered wood sculpture of Amida Nyorai Buddha, Japan, probably late Muromachi, early Edo period. Central figure of Pure Land Buddhism. The work is characterized by its serene, meditative expression, half-closed eyes and delicately sculpted lips, evoking compassion and inner peace. The Buddha stands with his hands in Raigo-in, a welcoming mudra. Dressed in a finely draped robe, highlighted by partial gilding that still retains a beautiful patina. The flesh is brown lacquered, the eyes sulfide, and the byakugo (urna) lacquered. The lotiform base has been lost and replaced by a modern black rectangular base. H. 29.5 cm. (Some wear and tear. Misses and repairs to fingers. Missing and small lacquer lifts on the garment)
