Antique pirogue paddle with a blade decorated with incised m - Lot 138
Antique pirogue paddle with a blade decorated with incised motifs, a twisted handle and a fishtail-shaped grip. The exceptional decoration here is comparable to a master's work and is composed of European motifs incorporating a Basque cross, two chalices, branches and flowers as well as radiating stars or suns. The blade and handle are painted black with the motifs highlighted in white, and the handle twist is left in natural wood. A priori, this is a presentation piece, perhaps a religious offering or a work of prestige. Tukuna peoples (Magta, Tikuna, Tucuna, Tukna, and Ticuna), Rio Solimões region, northwestern Amazon, Brazil, South America. Painted wood with old patina from age and use. H. 101 cm. XIX/XXth century. (Misses, cracks and wear). Handwritten label in Portuguese: Remo or "Rema" (paddle/frame) "Madeira" (wood), possibly "Jivari" (a river) and other words illegible as is. See : Ribeiro, Herta G., DICIONÁRIO DO ARTESANATO INDIGENA, Editora Universidade de São Paulo, 1988, p. 274, fig. 40.532, and example no. WM-3341 in the collections of the Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam, collected around 1880.
